Police across the north-west have vowed to ramp up traffic operations over the festive season following “disappointing results” from recent operations.
Inspector Adam Spencer said the increased patrols will focus on ensuring everyone using the region’s roads is safe.
Targeted operations in Smithton, Burnie, Ulverstone, Penguin, Forth and Devonport this week resulted in 50 detections of unsafe behaviour in a single day.
43 of the offences were for speeding, two for not wearing seatbelts, two for mobile phone use while driving, two for unlicensed driving and one for an unregistered vehicle.
“Seven of the speeding offences occurred in school zones which is unacceptable,” Spencer said.
“The potential death or serious injury of a child is heart-breaking and can be avoided if motorists obey speed limits and prioritise safety.”
Four P-platers were among those caught speeding, with their licences set to be suspended.
A 19-year-old from East Devonport was caught driving 32km/h over the limit and an 18-year-old from Smithton was detected going 29km/h over.
“We will continue to focus on road safety until road users comply and stop endangering others,” Spencer said.
“Our officers will be vigilant throughout the festive season.”
