Beachgoers at a popular beach south of Hobart are being warned to be cautious after ‘undetectable strong currents and quicksand’ were reported in the area.

Kingborough Council say the quicksand is in the waters of Kingston Beach north, at the junction of Browns River and the River Derwent.

They say several people have already had difficulty in the water due to quicksand and currents in the area.

The affected northern section of the beach is currently under a ‘no swim advisory’ due to a ‘poor’ quality rating as part of the Derwent Estuary Water Quality Program.

The council is reminding residents to be cautious and to be aware of the changing sand conditions, which can make the waters difficult to navigate and potentially hazardous.

Quicksand can pose a significant risk to swimmers, causing them to become stuck and potentially endangered.

Residents are urged to follow the no swim advisory and to avoid entering the water in the designated danger zone at Kingston Beach north.
