Updated: A walker who went missing in the Mount Roland Reserve area south-west of Sheffield has been located “safe and well”.

The man was winched to safety on Saturday after he managed to find an area with phone service to contact police.

Inspector Adam Spencer said while it was a great result, the walker had gone off track and encountered steep, dangerous terrain.

“He was well-prepared for a day walk, but found himself in trouble after travelling off track,” he said.

“It is a good reminder for walkers to always stay on defined tracks and prepare for emergencies.”

“Always ensure you have communicated your planned track and expected timings with a friend or family member and never deviate from that route.”

Earlier: A search and rescue operation has been launched in Tasmania’s Mount Roland Reserve for a man who has not returned from a walk he began on Thursday.

Peter Rogers, 48, was last seen sending a photo of himself atop Mount Claud at 7pm on Thursday.

Police said his family and friends have not heard from him since.

Rogers is described as being of a larger build and was last seen wearing a black long-sleeved shirt with a blue brimmed hat with sun protection on the back.

His motorcycle has been found in a carpark near the beginning of one of the trails leading into the mountains.

The rescue helicopter, police and State Emergency Service volunteers are combing the area and are asking for anyone with sightings to contact 131 444.

Police said they are liaising with event organisers for the Triple Top Mountain Run scheduled for Sunday and will notify participants of any changes or impacts to the race.
