Rosny remains the preferred site for the state’s AFL high-performance centre, the Minister for Sport has confirmed, despite the fact a development application is yet to be lodged.
Labor MP Josh Willie questioned the government’s commitment to the eastern shore site on Thursday, some nine months after the location was announced as the top spot.
“Clarence locals and businesses who voted yes to having a high-performance centre at Rosny are concerned you’re going to backflip on the location and send it down to Kingston,” he said.
“Are you actually committed to building a high-performance centre at Rosny? When will you lodge your development application?”
Minister Nic Street said testing and due diligence is “still ongoing” at both the Rosny and Kingston sites and a decision will be made once complete.
“Until such time as we announce that, Rosny remains the preferred site for the high-performance centre,” he said.
“We obviously can’t lodge the DA until we have chosen our final site. As soon as we do we will submit a DA and we hope to do that as soon as possible.”
The Minister’s comments come following an elector poll among locals, which was this week confirmed to have cost ratepayers $145,000.
It found that a slim majority of the community that voted supported building the $70 million facility entirely within the Rosny Parklands, with 14,236 or 51.39% voting yes and 13,466 or 48.61% voting no.
