Hobart’s iconic Salamanca Market has been cancelled this weekend due to the weather front currently impacting Tasmania.
Organisers made the “difficult decision” to call off the Saturday morning market following severe weather warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).
“Safety is our number one priority and that of our stallholders, our crew and all of the people who visit us each week,” they said.
“We’re sorry to disappoint anyone that may have travelled down especially to visit us, but we are sure you will all understand.”
The weather situation is continuing to develop, with the BOM predicting wind gusts of up to 110km/h over the weekend.
Meteorologists earlier today warned the worst of the wild weather was yet to come.
Several parks in the city have also been closed until Monday, including St David’s Park, Princes Park and Waterworks Reserves.
“It is highly unusual for the Market to be closed due to weather conditions, with the only time it has occurred previously in its 52-year history being in April 2013,” City of Hobart CEO Michael Stretton said.
“We apologise to anyone who may have travelled specifically to visit Tasmania’s most visited tourist attraction, but safety is our top priority.”
The market, which is Hobart’s top tourist destination, will return next Saturday, “weather permitting”.
