An Australian fur seal has been spotted lounging around on a footpath alongside the Derwent River by walkers.
The seal was seen in Hayes, west of New Norfolk, on Monday, having previously been observed around the river in recent weeks.
Appearing to be in no hurry, the seal was seen looking around as people watched from a distance.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment has previously urged people to stay back from wild sea animals and to let them rest.
“Coastal marine mammals such as seals are known to visit Tasmania’s large estuaries and river systems, often coinciding with seasonal movements. Seals may also come ashore but, in most cases, find their way back to the waterway,” a spokesperson said.
“Fur seals are wild animals and members of the public are reminded not to interfere with wildlife and keep their distance. Please keep your dogs on a lead and well away from the resting seal.”
