The state government is on the hunt for investors to build a new ice rink in Hobart, following the closure of the privately-operated Glenorchy rink two years ago.
Sports and Events Minister Nick Duigan said the government is looking to hear from interested parties with experience in delivering similar facilities and the capacity to take on the project.
“Since the privately-operated Glenorchy rink closed in mid-2022, the Tasmanian Government has been working to identify opportunities for a new venue that can host ice sports practice, competitions and recreational skating,” he said.
“We’ve been working hard behind the scenes with our sporting sector bodies and we’re now seeking interest from potential investors to build a new facility.”
A feasibility study released in June found an ice sports facility in Tasmania could provide for up to 125,000 annual visits.
It also estimated that the project could cost upwards of $40 million and should be located at the preferred site in Goodwood Park or alternative at the Kingborough sports precinct.
“We encourage interested parties to register their interest now ahead of a formal Expressions of Interest process, subject to demand, to be released in early 2025,” Duigan said.
