A Hobart woman received an unexpected shock over the long weekend when she discovered a snake in her swimming pool.

The baby copperhead became stuck in the swimming pool of the Sandy Bay home, with the resident taking to a local Facebook group to ask for assistance.

Chris Daly from Reptile Rescue Tasmania dispatched a local snake catcher to the home, who was able to safely remove and relocate the snake.

According to Daly, smaller snakes, especially young ones like the copperhead, are attracted by the scent of water, fall in and then struggle to get out.

Despite the potentially dangerous bite of copperheads, Daly says they are generally considered to be relatively calm in nature compared to other snake species.

The incident comes amid a busy period for snake handlers in the region, with Reptile Rescue Tasmania receiving between 80 to 100 calls per day.

The increase in callouts is attributed to the warmer weather and active breeding season.
