A popular Christmas light display in the centre of Hobart has been forced to ditch its snow machine, following a complaint from a ‘concerned citizen’.
Johnny’s Christmas Light Display on Molle Street attracts hundreds of spectators each night and is this year working with Hobart City Mission to raise funds for those in need.
On Thursday, display creator Giancarlo ‘Johnny’ Rigoli took to social media to share the news that they might not be able to use their snow machine again.
“Unfortunately we had the council knock on the door this morning about a noise complaint in regards to the snow machines,” he said.
“I’m sad to say we won’t be using the snow machines until further notice”.
City of Hobart Acting Connected City Director Felicity Edwards saysy a council officer deemed the snow machine to be “too noisy for night time use” following a complaint.
“The Environmental Management and Pollution Control (Noise) Regulations 2016, ‘prohibited hours of use’ provide clear guidance for a reasonable standard for noise in this case,” she told Pulse.
The regulations ban the use of motor vehicles, motor vessels, outboard motors, mobile machinery, forklift trucks and other “portable equipment” between 6pm and 7am.
The rest of Johnny’s display, including a model ferris wheel and lolly giveaways, will continue as normal.
