Motorists using the Southern Outlet in Hobart are being warned of upcoming traffic disruptions as work begins on a new transit lane corridor.

Changes to the city end of the outlet will be in place from Monday, with modifications planned through the Davey Street intersection and into Macquarie Street.

Work will take place behind safety barriers during the day between 7am and 5pm from Monday to Friday, with no lane closures or speed limit reductions necessary during these hours.

Intermittent lane closures of the existing Southern Outlet bus lane and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h will apply at night during the 6:30pm to 6:30am working hours from Sunday evening to Friday morning.

A State Growth spokesperson said the initial stage of the project, which involves earthworks, tree removal, relocation of services and kerb and gutter installation along a 300m section of the outlet towards Davey Street, is expected to take six to eight weeks.

“Please allow up to 10 minutes extra travel time during the night works and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs,” they said.

The work will involve the use of machinery which generates some noise and dust, but no blasting or vibrations.

“We will use noise barriers and will turn off movement alarms on machinery where we can,” the spokesperson said.

“However, nearby residents may still hear construction during working hours.”

“We will complete the noisiest work before 11pm and no night shifts are scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights to reduce the impact to residents on weekends.”

The entire project, including the addition of an extra lane between Davey and Macquarie streets, is expected to take around eight months to complete.
