‘Sudden wind gust’ damages hangar containing aircraft at Devonport Airport

A sudden, strong gust of wind caused damage to a hangar and multiple aircraft at Devonport Airport on Tuesday afternoon.

TasPorts CEO Anthony Donald confirmed the incident impacting the SureFlight hangar occurred at around 4pm.

He said two light aircraft, a helicopter and the hangar doors suffered damaged, along with other equipment including shelving and cupboards.

“A Devonport Airport maintenance team arrived on site to secure loose infrastructure and prevent the likelihood of further damage,” he told The Advocate.

“The hangar is operational on a limited basis noting more fulsome building repairs will commence as soon as possible.”

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded wind gusts of 63km/h at the airport at the time of the incident.

Devoport Airport is owned and managed by TasPorts and is located 10km east of the Devonport town centre.
