Tasmania Police have been left frustrated on day one of the long weekend after catching several dangerous drivers on the state’s roads.
Western Road Policing Services Inspector Adam Spencer said Friday night was a “poor start” after five drivers were intercepted across the north-west coast.
“Three people [were] charged with drink driving and two others with driving whilst disqualified between Burnie and Devonport,” he said.
“That’s multiple decisions by individuals that could have ended in tragedy.”
On Friday afternoon an international tourist lost her life near Poatina after the van she was travelling in with several others veered off the road.
“The community can expect our operations to continue all long weekend targeting the fatal five. Speeding, inattention, fatigue, seat belts and drug and drink driving,” Spencer said.
