Police caught 64 speeding drivers on the Bass and West Tamar highways in just two days this week, some travelling at more than 130km/h.

The officers were out in force on Thursday and Friday as part of targeted road safety operations leading up to the holiday period.

Of the drivers caught, one was clocked at 140km/h and another at 135km/h.

Two drivers weren’t wearing their seat belts properly and two were on their phones.

Inspector Nick Clark said there have been four fatal crashes and several serious crashes on the highways in the past eight months.

“Police want to make sure everyone stays safe on our roads,” he said.

“And these high visibility operations are a reminder to all road users that police can be anywhere, at any time.”

“We will continually monitor and enforce the road rules, and these road safety operations will continue in the lead up to and throughout the festive season.”
