Tasmania has triumphed on the world stage overnight, taking home two prestigious tourism awards at the City Nation Place Global Awards in London.
The state was nominated across five categories at the awards, which aim to recognise the work of teams promoting cities, regions and countries.
Brand Tasmania’s ‘Tasmanian Youth Story’ campaign was recognised as the best in the world for Citizen Engagement, while Tourism Tasmania’s ‘Odd Jobs’ campaign won the award for Best Communication Strategy in Tourism.
Launceston Central’s ‘The Lounge’ was a finalist for Best Placemaking Initiative and Brand Tasmania’s Jess Radford was a finalist for the City Nation Place Future Leader Award.
Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood travelled to London to accept the awards on behalf of Tasmania, having funded his own trip after being denied permission by the council to use ratepayer funds.
He was joined by Jess Radford from Brand Tasmania.
“Stoked to have been able to not only represent my country and state but also my city,” Garwood said.
“Huge congrats to Jess Radford and the team at Brand Tasmania and also our Launnie legend Amanda McEvoy and the team at Launceston Central for all the incredible work that goes into advocating for our amazing region.”
Tasmania and Port Macquarie were the only Australian finalists for the awards.
