The community of Sassafras, along with a very familiar roadside icon, gathered to celebrate the life of the late farmer Rick Rockliff on Monday.

Rick Rockliff, a pioneer of the poppy industry and a beloved member of the community, passed away in late November after a brief battle with cancer.

Among the guests was Tasmania’s iconic Big Spud, also known as Kenny the Kennebec, who proudly stood at the entrance to its creator’s funeral.

It had taken a tumble in October, but has since been lovingly restored to its former glory.

During the service, Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff, Rick Rockliff’s son, expressed thanks to the community for their support during this difficult time.

He also shared that his father would be fondly remembered as a loving father and grandfather to their entire family.

Shortly before he passed, Rick set out on the task of restoring the “solidly built” spud, which sustained “superficial” damage after the pole it was standing on was hit by a truck.

It is believed the spud will one day return to its home on the side of the Bass Highway as a memorial for Rick Rockliff.
