“There is absolutely no place for political violence in a modern democracy,” Rockliff wrote on X.

“It’s a big concern and certainly democracy is so important and a peaceful outcome is absolutely what all of us want.”

The incident left the former US president with a bullet piercing his right ear, a shooter dead and two other men in critical condition.

The former president was swarmed by Secret Service agents after gunshots rang out at the rally, before he was rushed into a motorcade and taken to a local medical centre.

Authorities believe the shooter is a 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for unity and calm in the wake of the incident and warned against misinformation.

“In Australia as in the United States, the essence and the purpose of our democracies is that we can express our views, debate our disagreements and resolve our differences peacefully,” he said.

“The people at this event, the candidate, the crowd, the free press covering it, were all participating in the democratic process.”

US President Joe Biden reportedly spoke to Trump and said there is “no place in America for this kind of violence”.
