Tasmania’s east coast on alert as bushfire closes road to Ansons Bay

People in the Ansons Bay and Policemans Point areas on Tasmania’s east coast have been told to stay informed as a bushfire burns nearby.

The blaze north of St Helens has been burning for around two days and does not post any “immediate threat”.

Authorities say it is moving towards the coast.

“The fire has crossed the Ansons River with the increasing north-westerly winds this afternoon,” authorities said.

“[It] is now progressing in a south-easterly direction towards Ansons Bay Road.”

Firefighters from Parks and Wildlife and the Tasmania Fire Service are on the scene and warn that conditions may change rapidly.

Police have closed Ansons Bay Road to all traffic between Groves Road and Policemans Point Road while crews work to contain the fire, which is “impacting the roadway”.

They are asking motorists to avoid the area.
