Tasmania’s first ever McDonald’s restaurant has marked a major milestone, celebrating its 35th birthday.
The McDonald’s outlet in Moonah opened its doors in 1989, with a total of 16 locally-owned McDonald’s now serving food across Tasmania.
Moonah franchisee Corey Mingari, who also owns the McDonald’s restaurants in North Hobart, Bridgewater and New Norfolk, said the team turned the store “purple” for the special occasion on Saturday – with a visit from McDonald’s icon ‘Grimace’.
“It was such a fun day celebrating with our community,” he said.
“There were lots of great activities like pin the shake on Grimace, a colouring-in station, Maccas tattoos on all the kids’ arms and hundreds of purple balloons, including our very own balloon artists creating some of the most fabulous balloons ever made, being given to all the kids.”
Mingari said even the staff got in on the act, with many donning purple face paint, sunglasses, ribbons and bucket hats for their shifts.
“Our special VIP was Glen who visited our store today and also on opening day 35 years ago,” he said.
“He still remembers being served by Sheryl Rainbird at the front counter and shared some pretty amazing stories with us.”
