TasNetworks has issued a warning to customers about a scam involving individuals impersonating company staff and asking for personal information.
The scammers are reportedly making phone calls and claiming to be from TasNetworks, soliciting details under the guise of updating a database.
The company says that it never calls customers to ask for personal, financial or security information.
“We encourage our customers to contact us direct on 1300 137 008 if they are contacted by someone they think is impersonating TasNetworks staff,” a spokesperson said.
“[We] recommend they also visit scamwatch.gov.au for further advice on how to avoid similar scams.”
The warning comes as TasNetworks crews work to restore power to hundreds of homes affected by recent storms.
Around 316 customers are currently experiencing outages across 16 incidents, the company said.
Independent MP Craig Garland successfully moved a motion in state parliament on Wednesday that will see TasNetworks’ response to the severe weather event reviewed.
He said he hopes the findings will help the company avoid similar issues around communication and restoration time in the future.
