Residents and visitors along the north-west coast now have improved mobile coverage thanks to the construction of new Telstra mobile base stations.

The upgrades in Forest, Boat Harbour, Redpa/Marrawah, Lower Scotchtown and Port Latta are part of the Regional Connectivity Program (RCP), funded by Telstra and the Commonwealth Government.

Telstra’s Regional General Manager for Tasmania Michael Patterson said the upgrades were necessary to meet the growing demand for data in the regions.

“Over the past five years to the end of FY24, network traffic on Telstra’s mobile network has increased by approximately 3.5 times and continues to grow by 20 percent per year,” he said.

“We know how important mobile connectivity is for Tasmanians and we can see this each day in our network data.”

“Co-investment programs such as this, where carriers like Telstra and the government work together to share the cost in bringing new coverage in regional and rural locations, are really important in helping deliver great connectivity outcomes.”

All sites were built under the RCP, excluding the mobile site at Forest, which was solely funded and constructed by Telstra.

Waratah-Wynyard Council Mayor Mary Duniam said the new mobile tower in Forest is a “significant step forward” for the community.

“Improved mobile coverage will not only enhance connectivity but also open up new opportunities for digital literacy, technology adoption and economic growth,” she said.
