Tasmania Police have caught multiple drivers breaking the law within just three hours during a traffic operation in Hobart.

Officers from the Western Uniform Division targeted the “fatal five” offences that contribute to serious and fatal crashes on the roads around the city centre on Wednesday morning.

Despite their efforts, the operation revealed a disappointing number of violations, with 45 offences detected in under three hours.

Ten drivers were caught speeding, including one who was travelling more than 30km/h over the posted 50km/h limit.

Seven drivers were found using their mobile phones, two were not wearing seatbelts and 20 had violated traffic lights.

Three unregistered vehicles and three instances of disobeying road signs were also detected.

“Seeing so many motorists disobeying traffic signals today was particularly disappointing, putting drivers and pedestrians at risk,” police said.

“Remember, we can be anywhere at any time and we will continue to target offences that put the community at risk.”
