In response to growing pressure to alleviate capacity shortages plaguing the Spirt of Tasmania ferries, operator TT-Line has announced 20 additional sailings between the mainland and the island state.

However, the extra trips will not be available until April, September and October of 2025.

The company also plans to modify the vehicle decks of the current Spirit I and Spirit II ferries to accommodate more caravans and motorhomes.

This adjustment, involving the raising and lowering of a “hanging deck”, will be implemented on sailings from January to April 2025.

“Typically, adjustments to high-space availability are made closer to each travel date,” a TT-Line spokesperson said.

“However, TT-Line has decided to apply these adjustments to all sailings in the first four months of 2025 to provide more flexibility and convenience for our passengers.”

Spirit of Tasmania bookings can be tricky to come by

The modifications will prioritise night sailings, which have the longest waitlists.

TT-Line says more than 200 waitlisted bookings have already been cleared in the initial stages of the change.

Freight operations will remain unaffected, the spokesperson said.
