A man caught behind the wheel at more than three and a half times the legal alcohol limit has been charged with several driving offences.

The 56-year-old from Legana was stopped by police on the West Tamar Highway at Rosevears around 11:20am on Saturday.

Officers allege the man was driving a silver Hyundai with a blood alcohol reading of 0.180 and did not hold a valid driver’s licence.

A police spokesperson said members of the public had provided “real-time information” about the man’s “erratic driving” between Legana and Rosevears.

“Drink driving is one of the ‘fatal five’ contributors to serious and fatal crashes and detecting anyone breaking the law in this regard is vital in keeping the roads safe for everyone,” they said.

The driver was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit, being an unlicensed driver and also being an unlicensed driver with alcohol in his system.

He was issued with an excessive drink driving notice, a penally that carries an immediate disqualification for two years.

The man was released on bail and will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court in December.
