A Tasmanian man who was killed in a motorcycle accident in his driveway in 2021 was unlicensed and impaired, a Coroner has found.

Andrew Quentin Turner, 45, died as a result of multiple blunt traumatic injuries he sustained after colliding with a parked Nissan Patrol in his Rocherlea driveway on 14 August 2021.

In his newly published findings, Coroner Robert Webster said Turner was riding the motorcycle while under the influence of alcohol and cannabis, both of which significantly impaired his driving ability.

“In addition it appears Mr Turner, despite riding dirt bikes in the bush and in paddocks for many years, had never been licensed to ride a motorcycle on a public street,” Webster said.

Three months prior to the accident, Turner’s car licence had been suspended due to unpaid fines.

“He simply should not have been riding this motorcycle on this evening.”

“His decision to do so was obviously influenced by the alcohol and cannabis he had consumed.”

The crash was determined to be caused by inexperience, high levels of intoxication and excessive speed.

“This case serves as yet another sad reminder that the excessive consumption of alcohol, together with the consumption of illicit drugs and excessive speed can, as it did in this case, have tragic consequences,” Webster said.
