A group of tourists who were out bushwalking in Tasmania’s Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park have been rescued after they became stranded by “rising water levels”.
The group from Victoria, all in their 30s, raised the alarm using a satellite emergency call around 5pm on Saturday.
Acting Inspector Robert Bessell said the group had embarked on their hike in the Lake Rhona area earlier that morning before encountering difficulties.
He said it took over 14 hours for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to locate the group and extract them from the park.
“The group was located … about 8:20am this morning,” Bessell said on Sunday.
“It’s important for everyone considering bushwalking to remember to be prepared with up-to-date equipment, appropriate clothing and adequate supplies.”
People venturing out for a bushwalk are strongly advised to ensure they have the right equipment, thoroughly research their planned route and weather conditions and inform someone of their plans before setting out.
