Social media users are being warned to be on the lookout for fake scams offering passenger train rides between Hobart and Launceston after malicious ads began popping up online.

The ads, which have been seen across Facebook, entice people to “experience the Hobart-Launceston Train Tour” and feature images of a sleek, modern train.

They appear to target older social media users, offering discounted prices for seniors and couples.

“Join us for a memorable journey from Hobart to Launceston with special ticket discounts for seniors and couples. Discover the stunning landscapes and charming towns of Tasmania along the way,” the ad reads.

It goes on to list a range of amenities supposedly available onboard, including free Wi-Fi, complimentary meals, scenic views and even sleeping car discounts.

A spokesperson for TasRail, the state government owned entity responsible for Tasmania’s rail lines, says they are “disappointed to hear that online scammers are now targeting rail fans”.

Tasmania’s ‘Tasman Limited’ passenger train services ceased in 1978

“While we have a very active tourist and heritage sector that visitors to the state can enjoy, no passenger rail services currently operate on the Tasmanian rail network,” they said.

“TasRail encourages people to actively research their trip to Tasmania via reputable online sites before visiting the state.”

It’s been 45 years since Tasmania’s last passenger train service, the Tasman Limited, ran between Hobart, Launceston and Wynyard.

It was discontinued in 1978 due to financial struggles and the growing popularity of cars.

The rail line between Hobart and Brighton was closed in 2014 and is soon set to be disjointed when the old Bridgewater Bridge is demolished.
