The prosecution had initially alleged Ridgers caused the baby’s death by violently shaking and throwing him into his cot, but amended the charges’ wording from ‘throwing’ to ‘dropping’.

Ridgers was first charged with causing grievous bodily harm, a charge later upgraded to murder.

He pled not guilty to this prior to pleading guilty the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Acting Justice David Porter remanded Ridgers in custody until December 11 for sentencing.

Khaylan’s mother Maddison Butler said she intends to read her victim impact statement to the court next month.
