Chaos erupted in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Thursday as a female prisoner attempted a daring escape while screaming for her mother.
The incident unfolded during the woman’s appearance in court on multiple charges, including stealing, aggravated burglary, drug offences and driving under the influence.
The woman, who cannot be named due to her intention to apply for bail, grew increasingly agitated throughout her 20-minute hearing, crying, yelling and pleading with Magistrate Chris Webster to release her.
As her case concluded, the woman broke free from the dock and bolted towards the courtroom exit while being escorted back to the holding cells, as reported by The Mercury.
Two security guards attempted to restrain her, but she fought back, screaming “Mum! Mum!” as her mother looked on in tears.
The struggle intensified, prompting four more security guards to rush into the courtroom and Magistrate Webster to be ushered out.
The officers eventually pinned the prisoner to the floor and wall, successfully detaining her.
“Well, that was an eventful start to 2025,” Magistrate Webster remarked upon returning to the courtroom minutes later.
