Two people have been told they must appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court for lighting fires during a Total Fire Ban in the state’s south this week.

One of the suspected arsonists, a 13-year-old, is believed to have started a suspicious fire in Cygnet on Thursday.

Police say the blaze, which began in grassland at the rear of a house, was reported to authorities around 5:30pm.

“The fire … caused significant damage to a campervan located in the backyard,” police said.

A 67-year-old man will also front court for allegedly lighting a fire on the side of the Channel Highway at Margate.

Multiple triple-zero callers reported the blaze to authorities on Friday morning.

“A quick response from the property owner and fire crews meant it was quickly contained to a small area and extinguished,” police said.

The fires come as police confirm that a bushfire currently burning through approximately 4,000 hectares in the state’s central highlands was deliberately lit.

“Deliberately lighting fires is appalling,” Commander Jason Elmer said on Friday.

“This sort of behaviour has the potential to risk the lives and livelihoods of community members, as well as the lives and safety of our first responders.”

The total fire ban put in place across Southern Tasmania due to extreme fire danger conditions earlier this week will come to an end at 2am on Saturday.
