Tasmania Police issued over two dozen barring orders and multiple infringement notices in an April crackdown to improve public safety in Hobart’s CBD.
The Southern District Licensing Unit patrolled licensed city clubs and pubs, focusing on patron behaviour last month, issuing 26 barring orders and 13 infringement notices.
Inspector John Toohey said the aim was to create a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone who visits Hobart’s nightspots.
“Barring orders are an essential tool in protecting the community by stopping individuals from entering licensed premises where their behaviour poses a risk to public safety or breaches liquor licensing laws,” Inspector Toohey said.
“Barring orders may be issued when a person is at-risk as a result of drinking alcohol, if they have committed an offence or behaved in an offensive or disorderly manner on or near a licensed premises, or there are reasonable grounds to do so.”
He said infringements were issued for offences including violent or disorderly conduct on licensed premises, attempting to enter a venue while subject to a barring order and failing to leave a licensed venue when requested.
“Tasmania Police is committed to working closely with licensed venues to ensure compliance with liquor licensing legislation, as compliance not only protects patrons but also contributes to the overall safety and well-being of the community,” he said.
“The focus will continue.”
