West Tamar Highway forced shut as bushfire burns near Exeter

A bushfire has forced the closure of a busy highway in northern Tasmania.

The blaze alongside the West Tamar Highway near Exeter was reported shortly before 10:30am on Saturday.

Police have closed a section of the highway between the intersection of Rookery Road, Main Road Exeter and Winkleigh Road.

They say detours are in place and have urged motorists to avoid the area.

Local firefighters report that the power lines fell approximately 2km north of Exeter.

As of yet, TasNetworks has not reported any power outages related to the incident.
