Labor say renters will be better off under a red government and their proposed program aimed at enhancing energy efficiency in rental properties and social housing.

Leader Rebecca White says the burden of deciding whether to heat your home or put food on the table will be reduced under the $5 million Labor policy.

“[We] will help landlords make energy efficient upgrades to their rental properties by providing $1,000 to 2,500 homes when the landlord provides a matched contribution,” she said.

“All upgrades currently available under the Energy Saver Loan Scheme will be eligible.”

The upgrades will include better glazing, lighting and new hot water systems in homes, as well as the installation of insulation or heat pumps.

The scheme will be limited to 2,500 homes, with a condition that the property remains in the long-term rental market and not converted into short-stay for at least three years.

“Tasmanian Labor is serious about providing cost of living relief unlike the Liberal Government who has had 10 years to do the work and has failed to make an impact,” she said.

They estimate that the upgrades will save households more than $4,500 over 10 years.
