A pollution incident that discoloured the waters off Blackmans Bay Beach on Tuesday remains a mystery.

The Kingborough Council thanked members of the public who alerted them to the incident, saying further investigation by the Environment Protection Authority confirmed the discharge had stopped by the afternoon.

However, authorities were unable to identify the source of the pollution.

“Please remember that only rainwater can go down stormwater drains, both on your property and in the roadside drains,” the council said online.

“When people put unwanted liquids and waste down the stormwater drain, it quickly ends up in our creeks and onto beaches.”

The council said litter, paint, soil, dog poo, oil, cigarette butts, detergents and chemicals, soapy water from washing cars and grass clippings “should not end up in the stormwater system”.
