Authorities have assured residents in the Burnie area that a large plume of smoke visible in the region is “no cause for concern”.

The Tasmania Fire Service is currently undertaking a fuel reduction burn at Wivenhoe as part of the state-wide program aimed at minimising bushfire risk and protecting lives and communities.

The controlled burn will cover approximately 23 hectares and is expected to take 2-3 days to complete, with smoke likely to linger for several days afterwards depending on wind conditions.

“While the fire intensity will be low, it will generate flames, smoke and ash,” a spokesperson said.

“People with medical conditions are advised to have a personal plan for avoiding smoke from the burn.”

Public access to the burn area is restricted during operations and authorities have asked people to stay away until the burn is complete and safety checks have been made.
