Tasmania is on high alert as the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issues a severe weather warning for the region, with “destructive winds” set to batter the state today.

According to the BOM, parts of the state can expect damaging winds with average speeds ranging from 60 to 70 km/h, and in some cases, reaching well over 100 km/h.

While the intensity of the winds is expected to subside during the early afternoon in the southern areas and late afternoon in the northern regions, caution is still advised throughout the day.

Residents of Burnie, Ulverstone, Sheffield and Deloraine are among those who may be directly affected by the adverse weather conditions.
