Neil the Seal has been fenced in by authorities as he makes his return to Tasmanian shores, enjoying some downtime at a beach in Hobart’s east.
The 700kg social media sensation has been basking in the gloomy weather, body-slamming and biting at traffic cones on the beach.
Staff from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania have been keeping Neil company.
Some areas of the beach have been taped off to restrict the seal and the public’s access to him.
Neil however has appeared unbothered by the barriers, including electric fences, that have been set up in an attempt to keep him safe.
Police were on the scene throughout the day on Monday to prevent Neil from being hit by passing vehicles.
People are being asked to remain at least 20 metres away from Neil and to avoid sharing his location online.
“Although we understand the temptation to visit Neil, we are asking all members of the public to stay away,” NRE Marine Conservation Program wildlife biologist Dr Kris Carlyon said.
On Saturday night, Neil reportedly jumped on a car and set off its alarm.
Police were called in to try and move him off the road as people watched on.
