A weekend of extreme fire danger in some parts of the state has prompted the Tasmania Fire Service to declare a total fire ban.

The ban will apply to the entire Southern region of Tasmania from 2am on Sunday until 2am on Monday.

Acting Southern Regional Chief Phil Smith said the restrictions were necessary due to the strong winds expected and the deteriorating forecast conditions.

“While temperatures aren’t expected to be particularly high, strong winds and dry conditions means this is the safest way to protect our communities,” he said.

“These decisions are made in the best interest of our community members and we appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation.”

Multiple fires started ahead of the most recent total fire ban two weeks ago, with some in the Highlands continuing to burn today.

“Firefighting efforts in the Central Highlands and surrounding areas are continuing to make good progress and while we have other resources on hand for the weekend if required, we really need Tasmanians to help us keep our communities safe,” Smith said.

“Fires are also continuing to emerge from the recent lightning strikes on Wednesday evening. We have had several starts which crews and aircraft have managed and will continue surveillance flights across the state.”

The ban prohibits all open fires in Southern Tasmania, including incinerators, burn-offs, campfires, fire pots and wood-fuelled barbecues.

Any sightings of fire or smoke activity over the weekend should be reported immediately to Triple Zero (000).
