An Ulverstone motorcyclist who flew past police at a staggering 200km/h on the Bass Highway yesterday is lucky to be alive, authorities say.

The 32-year-old was caught speeding near Sulphur Creek on Tuesday afternoon and returned a positive roadside drug test after he was stopped by police.

“This is extremely concerning behaviour which placed not only the motorcycle rider but other road users at significant risk of serious injury or death,” Acting Inspector Craig Harvey of Western Road Policing Services said.

“We know that speeding and driving under the influence of illicit substances form part of the ‘Fatal Five’ which are known to contribute to serious and fatal crashes.”

He said the man has had his motorcycle seized and will face court in the coming months.

“Tasmania Police will continue to have an increased presence on the roads during the summer holiday period. Anyone undertaking this sort of high-risk driving behaviour can expect to be detected and face significant consequences,” Harvey said.
