A feasibility study into the possibility of building a new ice rink in Tasmania has found that the project could cost upwards of $40 million.

The study, commissioned by the state government following the closure of the state’s only ice rink in 2022, identified two potential locations – the preferred site Goodwood Park and the Kingborough Sports Precinct.

It also found that a new rink could draw up to 125,000 visits each year.

Acting Minister for Sport and Events Nick Duigan said the study confirmed there are options available to provide a home for ice sports and a recreational skating facility in the state.

“As we have always said, this development will require the private sector to step in and be confident that the build and ongoing operation is viable and I’m pleased that we’ve been able to provide a blueprint for that,” he said.

“The Department of State Growth will now continue its work to develop an Expression of Interest package for potential private investors.

The study found that Glenorchy City Council, where the original rink was located, would likely not be able to provide funding for the project and expressed reluctance to take on the responsibility of owning or managing a new rink.

“We appreciate the patience of the Tasmanian ice sports community as we’ve worked constructively and positively with them to get to this pivotal point,” Duigan said.

“We will continue to engage with all stakeholders as we work towards a new ice sports facility in this state.”
