Truck drivers travelling through Hobart’s northern suburbs will soon have a new and improved rest area to take breaks.
The development will be located within the growing Brighton Hub, thanks to a combined investment of $450,000 from the Australian Government ($360,000) and Brighton Council ($90,000).
“Without our truckies Australia stops,” Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Carol Brown said.
“We want to support our hard-working truck drivers to rest when they need to and keep freight moving safely and that’s why this government supporting new and upgraded heavy vehicle rest areas.”
The project at the intersection of Glenstone Road and Strong Street is part of a larger initiative funded with nearly $6.7 million.
It would include toilets, shelter and rest facilities.
Brown emphasised that truck drivers and the road transport industry will have a say in the final design of the rest area.
“Projects under this initiative will also create construction jobs and opportunities for local suppliers and businesses, boosting local economies and driving their growth,” she said.
The Brighton Hub is already a significant industrial centre, housing large companies like TasRail, Global Express and SRT Logistics.
