Bell Bay Port in Tasmania’s north was forced to close on Tuesday morning after a large, unmanned vessel broke free from its mooring.

The 63-metre MV Wyuna, formerly a training ship for the Australian Maritime College, drifted across the Tamar River on Tuesday before being towed back to port.

TasPorts said Marine and Safety Tasmania and the Environment Protection Authority have both been contacted.

They said attempts to reach the boat’s owner were ongoing.

MV Myuna

This isn’t the MV Wyuna’s first brush with trouble, with 2017 reports indicating Tasmanian authorities were prepared to seize the vessel seven years ago.

The following year, the ship remained without a permanent mooring and its future appeared uncertain.

Authorities at the time said they had run out of patience for it, as the owners battled lengthy delays in securing insurance.
