The Burnie City Council has confirmed it has no immediate plans to enhance food or retail offerings in Cooee, despite concerns about the lack of services in the area.
At a recent council meeting, Mayor Teeny Brumby said the council is “not currently pursuing any actions for Cooee in relation to growth of food or retail offerings”.
The mayor’s response came after a local voiced frustration about the limited amenities available in the “third-world like” retail area, which is 3km west of the CBD.
“It’s got to the stage where the elderly cannot even get a litre of milk unless they drive to Burnie or Somerset,” the resident said.

“Take for example, you have the coastal pathway, which is finally finished with some lovely seating, looking onto the beach. It’s a shame that you have to BYO to have your lunch or even a drink of water.”
They suggested public barbecue facilities as one potential improvement.

Brumby said the council remains supportive of growth in the area.
“Council supports the ongoing development of the Cooee area and looks forward to working with any interested developers in the future,” she said.
