Tasmanians are being warned of likely river flooding across the state in the coming days as a series of cold fronts bring heavy rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued early advice for possible flooding across major rivers, including the North Esk, South Esk, Meander, Macquarie, Mersey, Forth, Arthur, Nelson Bay, Pieman, King-Henty, Huon and Derwent.

The Bureau says minor flooding is likely from Wednesday, with isolated moderate flooding possible throughout the flood watch area.

“A west to northwesterly airstream begins to develop today, becoming strong ahead of a cold front which crosses the state later on Tuesday,” the Bureau said.

“Another cold front embedded in the strong westerly winds moves over the state during Wednesday, as a trough approaches the west and crosses the state into Thursday.”

The Bureau said catchments across Tasmania are relatively wet from rainfall over the last several weeks and will “react quickly” to further downpours.

“Widespread minor flooding is likely throughout the flood watch area, with isolated moderate flooding possible,” the BOM said.

“Especially in smaller catchments, several peaks are likely to occur during this week.”
