A mountain biker remains in a coma in the intensive care unit at the Royal Hobart Hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest on the Maydena Bike Park trails last weekend.
51-year-old Warrick ‘Waz’ Bidwell was competing in the Enduro Jam event on the last day of November when he was seriously injured after coming off his bike.
The park’s MTB Patrol Team found Bidwell unconscious and immediately began performing CPR, with emergency physicians, paramedics and nurses providing further treatment at the scene.
He was then airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where he remains in an induced coma on life support.
Bidwell’s wife Amie has since done “what no wife should ever have to do” and launched a fundraiser to help support the family through the “uncertain” road ahead.
“With the loss of our entire household income and the long journey ahead, we have started a GoFundMe page below so that Waz can access the best supports to give him the best chance of recovery,” she said.
“Waz has touched the hearts and influenced the lives of so many people in so many ways. He is selfless, loyal, funny, capable, deeply loving and respectful, disciplined and dedicated, creative and innovative and always puts others before himself.”
“Now is the time where he needs us all the most.”
The fundraiser has already amassed over $10,000 in donations in just a few hours since its launch on Saturday.
The funds will be used to support the family, including his 14-month-old son Jack and 13-year-old daughter Grace, with financing what will “undoubtedly be a long and challenging journey” and recovery ahead.
