Homemade explosive device allegedly found in Launceston man’s vehicle

Police have seized a homemade explosive device allegedly found in a Launceston man’s vehicle and charged him with multiple firearm and drug related offences.

The 30-year-old from Youngtown was stopped while driving a “vehicle of interest” in the Launceston CBD on Wednesday.

Officers from the Northern Drugs and Firearms Unit searched the vehicle that allegedly contained the explosive device and arrested the man.

Subsequent searches of an address linked to the man allegedly uncovered suspected illicit substances, firearm parts and several weapons, including pepper spray and knuckledusters.

He has been charged with five counts of unlawfully possessing a dangerous article in a public place, several drug offences and multiple firearm related offences.

The man was held overnight and will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court today.

Police have not provided any further details about the man’s intentions.
