Huon River expected to rise at Huonville, council closes road due to flooding

Parts of the Huon Valley are on flood watch as more heavy rain is expected to fall across the region.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a minor flood warning for the Huon River, with river levels expected to rise above minor flood levels at Huonville on Wednesday afternoon.

The Huon River at Tahune Bridge and Judbury are currently below minor flood levels and are easing, but remain elevated.

“Rainfall has eased in the Huon catchment, however further strong cold fronts are forecast and renewed river level rises are possible later in the week,” the Bureau said.

“A Flood Watch is current for parts of Tasmania including the Huon River catchment.”

The Esplanade in Huonville has been closed to traffic due to flooding and motorists are being asked to use Flood Road as an alternative.

According to the BOM, the Huon River at Tahune Bridge peaked at 4.50 metres around 4am on Wednesday and is currently at 3.62 metres and falling.

The river at Judbury peaked at 3.94 metres around 7am and is currently at 3.75 metres and falling, while the river at Huonville is currently at 2.65 metres and steady.
