Snow is forecast to fall as low as 200 metres across Tasmania this weekend, prompting authorities to warn of potential road closures and hazardous conditions.

The Hobart City Council’s snow crew will be out on kunanyi/Mt Wellington early on Saturday morning checking road conditions as wintery conditions settle in.

“With snow forecast to such low levels, the road could well be closed at the park entry all day Saturday,” the council said.

“If driving, please check access to Pinnacle Road, be patient, drive safely and park only in designated areas.”

“A few illegally parked vehicles can create traffic jams for everyone else.”

“There is no parking at Gate 1 and it is difficult to turn around, so please avoid the traffic congestion at the park entry on Saturday.”

They said there will be traffic congestion at The Springs once if the road is safe to open up.

Temperatures for the summit are forecast to be below zero degrees celsius all through Saturday.

“If not well prepared, the mountain weather can be deadly,” the council warns.

“For every 100 metres you ascend the temperature typically falls a degree.”

“The summit is 600 metres higher than The Springs and is likely to be 6°C colder. If it’s windy, the summit will feel even colder.”

“Low cloud can reduce visibility to a few metres. Snow and ice can make tracks very slippery.”
