Tasmanians will be able to save almost $200 on power disconnection and connection charges under a Labor-led government, as leader Rebecca White has revealed.

Her party plans to scrap all “unfair power bill charges” that burden those relocating homes with additional expenses on top of their already high power bills.

“Tasmanians who are moving into a new house with a basic meter currently have to pay around $100 to connect the electricity and $64 for a final meter read when moving out of a house, meaning anyone with a basic meter is up for $165 in fees,” White said.

“No-one should have to pay nearly $200 in fees when they move house just because their meter hasn’t been upgraded.”

The policy targets unfair charges and aims to provide relief during a cost-of-living crisis, particularly to young people and renters.

The proposed changes follow an announcement from the party that they plan to cap power prices in their first 100 days of government.

“Tasmania owns the Hydro and produces power locally, so why are we paying mainland prices,” White questioned.

“After 10 years of the Liberals, Tasmanians are being ripped off on their power bills. It’s time for a better future and the only way to make that happen is to elect a Labor Government.”

According to the 2023 annual report, Aurora Energy saw an increase in revenue from connection services and fees, reaching $3.28 million in 2023 compared to $3.06 million the previous year.
