Police believe the man used Facebook to contact sellers and deceive them into handing over their vehicles by providing fraudulent bank transfer receipts as proof of payment.

Detectives from the Northern Criminal Investigation Branch investigating the incident said everything the man obtained was done using “false pretences”.

He will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on April 26.

“Police believe that there may be further frauds that are yet to be reported and are urging victims to come forward,” a spokesperson said.

“People are reminded to be cautious when selling goods online and appropriate steps are taken both to confirm the identity of whom you are selling to and that payment is received.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Northern Criminal Investigation Branch or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
