The list of power outages around Tasmania is growing as severe weather strikes the state.

Strong winds, vehicle accidents and fallen trees have left more than 8,651 households from Bridport in the north to Garden Island Creek in the south without power tonight.

30 outages are currently active across the TasNetworks network, with some affecting just a few homes and business right up to over 1,800.

Shortly before 7pm, all television and radio services from kunanyi/Mount Wellington were taken off-air as the result of an outage in Fern Tree.

TasNetworks spokesperson Danielle Duffin said earlier today that after an outage is reported, crews have to patrol the lines to find the location and the cause – which can take some time.

“Generally, that means there’s trees on lines or there might be wires down and things like that,” she said.

“Crews have been very busy and they continue to work to hopefully have the power restored sooner rather than later.”

UPDATE 7:45PM: There are now close to 40 outages affecting over 12,936 properties across Tasmania.

1,500 households in Brighton, Campania and Kempton are the latest to be disconnected.

Dangerous conditions for crews mean estimated restoration times are not yet available for many outages, with long delays expected.
